The Artists' Residence of Makubwa House offers residencies to professional or non-professional creative artists from all nations and backgrounds working in choreography, film, literature, musical composition, painting, performance art, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and video and any other art form.

Living together with other creative people in a magnificent environment can only stimulate your creative process; be that finishing your video editing projects, your first novel, your last choregraphy or any of your many projects.


Our mission at Makubwa House Artists' Residence is to support and feed the creative process for our guests by providing a supportive, majestic and exotic environment.


The pure Swahili Culture feel of Makubwa House will inspire you and your colleagues to great artistic exchanges while taking a break from your everyday big city life.


We strive to attract artists from all over the world so that socializing at Makubwa House will have a cosmopolitan flavor bringing many different languages to the big mahogany dining table at Makubwa House.

Some believe that Makubwa House itself is the source of mystical creative power.

Services of Ali Maulidi the Houseman are included.

He will invite you to go to market with him. Expense for food will usually not exceed $10 a day.

He will make you breakfast and an authentic Swahili dinner with freshly squeezed juices every evening.

There are two separate bedrooms. The master bedroom has a king size bed and its own air conditioning unit.

The guestroom has a queen size bed.

Each bedroom has its own bathroom. There are five bathrooms in total.

There are two additional single beds for children. And near the swimming pool on the main floor there is a double size bed.

If you require additional beds, we can try and arrange for that.

Daily rate for the complete house is euro € 200

This also includes the use of our own speedboat "Mr. Boat"

At the regular transport charges set by our Captain, which consist of fuel and the Captain's hourly or daily rate, you can discover the archipelago at your own speed.
